A LOUIS XVI TWO-COLOUR GOLD SEALING-WAX CASE
by René-Antoine Bailleul (fl. 1769-1791), marked, Paris, 1775-1781, with the charge and export discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache and the export discharge mark of Henry Clavel, later struck with two Dutch tax marks and two French import marks for gold 1864-1893
Slightly tapering small étui-à-cire of oval section, the lower halves of cover and base chased with fluted arches framing husks alternating with short garlands of stylized leaves, the upper halves of polished gold hung with laurel festoons, frosted gold borders stamped with stylized acanthus, bright-cut rims, the slightly raised gold top of the cover centred with a flowerhead on a polished ground, blank matrix
