Lot Essay

The sitter was wife of Henry John Stephen (1787-1864), a well-known lawyer and brother of Sir George Stephen (1794-1879), a barrister, whose portrait Linnell had painted in 1827. Linnell visited Henry Stephen at the beginning of November and began a portrait of his wife on 6 November. He was dissatisfied with this and began a second portrait, the present picture, on 12 November for an agreed price of £25, which was delivered to Henry Stephen on 30 January 1830.
We are grateful to David Linnell for his assistance in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
