The polychrome enamel clasped hands, one holding a red enamel heart, opening to form two rings, the inside of each hoop with black enamel inscription ELBERTA VAN BLANCKENDAEL and IOHAN STRICK 1611

Gimmel rings were noted in the 13th century and many have the Roman symbol of love - clasped hands, while others are surmounted by two precious stones. This ring is dated 1611 and interestingly Christie's London sold a more elaborate marriage ring in October 1991, lot 360, which was also Dutch and dated 1610. This example had the New Testament marriage vow 'What God hath joined...,' traditionally used instead of the names of the couple
