A GREEK LIMESTONE LION-HEAD WATER SPOUT
Tarantine, Classical Period, Circa 4th Century B.C.
Tilted downwards, the head framed with a double row of flame-like tufts, each incised down the center, the rounded ears emerging from within the mane, the forehead bisected by a groove terminating at the furrowed brow, the deep-set eyes bulging, the muzzle with incised whiskers, the remains of fangs and incisors visible in the gaping mouth, the lower jaw missing, the mouth open through to the trough projection on the reverse for insertion into an architectural facade
