A FANTASTIC PRIVATE CELLAR FROM THE FAMILY OF ONE OF AMERICA'S FOREMOST INVENTORS
Being a wine fanatic myself I am always excited to visit someone's cellar for the first time, be it large or small and be it for a client or a friend. However, the most satisfying of cellars are those which are not for show, but those that are purely and simply for the enjoyment of fine wine. This is such a cellar.
Tucked underneath the games room, adjacent to both the bar and the dining room, it's position is perfect. Temperature and humidity controlled at all times, the wines are in great condition. So cold and damp was this cellar that one could have been mistaken for thinking that the cellar was in the highlands of Scotland, not east coast USA. I tasted a bottle of Mouton-Rothschild 1970 (level: top shoulder), a wine notorious for not cellaring well. It was delicous; ripe, full of life and with great flavour and a fine long finish. Hallmarks of a well stored wine.
This cellar comes to us from the family of a man who has recently passed away. Survived by his lovely wife and eight children, he was a family man, who in all respects enjoyed life. After a distinguished career in medical and bio-medical electronics he changed paths in the 1970s when, after watching an old Star Trek rerun of Spock playing chess against the ship's computer, he conceived the idea of electronic and computer chess. A great chess player in his own right, it seemed that he found that great combination of work and pleasure.
Among his many other pursuits he was a keen collector of vintage and classic cars. His wines too are vintage and classic and he preferred them to be supple and mature. Almost all of these wines were purchased directly upon release and from the very finest of sources. This is a drinking cellar, the many verticals and mixed lots reflect this and it is now time for others to enjoy these fine wines.
