Lot Essay

In the J.K.Rowling story Harry Potter And The Philospher's Stone and the subsequent film, Harry's letter of acceptance to Hogwart's School is central to the plot. Orphaned as a baby, Harry is left with his mother's dull sister, Petunia Dursley, her unpleasant husband Vernon and their odious son, Dudley. They reluctantly house him in the 'cuboard under the stairs' and force him to live a life of drudgery in complete ignorance of his true origins. Harry is unaware of his 'magical' background until shortly before his eleventh birthday when a letter of acceptance arrives from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Uncle Vernon however refuses to let him open the letter and destroys it, only to be bombarded by hundreds of letters which pour into the house via the chimney and letter box and any possible opening. Driven mad by the onslaught, Harry's Uncle forces his family and Harry to evacuate to a remote island hideaway to evade the 'magical' post once and for all. His plans however are thwarted by the arrival of Rubens Hagrid, the vast and trusted caretaker to Hogwarts. Hagrid personally delivers the letter to Harry, and reveals to him who his parents truly were, how they really died, and why it is that he is destined to become a wizard.
