This and the following costume design were executed for the Polish opera singer Ganna Walska (1887-1984). In 1920 Walska -- a diva of substantial means derived from a succession of generous divorce settlements but talents inferior to her operatic ambitions -- commissioned costume designs from Erté for her forthcoming performances in the Chicago Opera House's productions of Giordano's Fedora and Massenet's Thaïs, and subsequently commissioned further costume designs from him. A variant of this design is illustrated in Erté's biography Things I Remember (London: 1975), plate 1.
