Lot Essay

The present composition is inspired ultimately by Jan Brueghel I's Fish Market by a River in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn. Ertz (loc. cit.) described the author as a talented follower ('ein begabter Nachfolger') of the master, who remains as yet unidentified. He regards all other versions of the composition as deriving from the present picture.
