Lot Essay

The artist was the son of Joris van Son and is thought to have studied under Jean-Paul Gillemans in Antwerp. He travelled to London at an early age and there married the daughter of the English painter Robert Streater. This marriage was greatly beneficial to his career and he remained in London for the rest of his life.

Works by the artist are extremely rare. The present pair can be compared on stylistic grounds to the larger floral composition, dated 1705, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille.

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for the attribution, given after inspection in the original.
