6 volumes, 4o (272 x 210 mm). 544 stipple-engraved plates after the author, printed in colors and finished by hand (some occasional pale discoloration around subjects, heaviest in vol. I, occasional pale spotting and soiling). Contemporary quarter green morocco (worn). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1876; stamps).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE WORK, originally issued in parts containing 4 plates each. Only three copies have appeared at auction since 1975: the Plesch copy (a special large-paper copy with additional plates) and two incomplete copies. Stafleu notes that the "contents are incompletely known" but that it was planned to have 800 plates. Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return.
