KERNER, Johann Simon (1755-1830). Figures des plantes économiques. Stuttgart: Christoph Friedrich Cotta [volume IV: l'auteur, and Strassburg: Librarie academique; volumes V and VI: l'Académie Caroline; volume VII: l'Imprimerie du Duc; and volume VIII: l'auteur and Gebrüdern Mäntler], 1786-1796.
8 volumes, 4o (282 x 223 mm). 8 hand-colored etched title vignettes each devoted to a different botanist and 800 hand-colored etched plates by Kerner (a few plates with some very pale marginal dampstaining). (Some intermittent pale dampstaining.) Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, morocco lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers (few discreet repairs, light wear at extremities). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Albert C. Burrage Fund (bookplate; blindstamps on titles only).
FRENCH LANGUAGE ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF KERNER'S SCARCE FLOWER BOOK, with "delicately etched plates" (Great Flower Books). Kerner, a German-born botanist and botanical artist who lectured at the Carls-Universität in Stuttgart, drew, engraved and perhaps colored the plates. The text was available in either German or French, and the subscriber's list records 91 names for the very small edition of 100 copies. Stafleu & Cowan had seen only the incomplete Berlin Botanical Gardens and Museum copy; NUC records only the Vassar College copy. The present copy was the only one recorded by Dunthorne. There is also a copy in the Natural History Museum, London. Brunet III, 654; Dunthorne 164 (this copy); Great Flower Books (1990), p.107; Nissen BBI 1034; Pritzel 4639; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3604. A VERY FINE COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING. (8)
