4o (291 x 234 mm). 30 hand-colored engraved plates by William Hooker, 27 after Elisabeth Matthews, 3 after Frances Knight (some occasional pale marginal soiling, last plate lightly foxed.) (Last leaf a bit soiled and foxed and with marginal tear.) Contemporary black half calf, blue cloth boards, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine (a bit rubbed, wear at extremities). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1884; stamps).

FIRST EDITION of this important work with highly attractive color plates by one of the most celebrated pomological illustrators, William Hooker. Thomas Andrew Knight, brother of Richard Payne Knight and president of the Horticultural Society from 1811 to 1838, devoted most of his life to the study of agriculture and horticulture, improving various kinds of fruit from seed produced by hybridisation and careful selection, instead of the traditional methods of grafting. His work is celebrated for its realism, the plates including "scabby fruit... and wooly aphid-clad twigs" (Janson). Dunthorne 168; Great Flower Books, p.108; Nissen BBI 1072; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3761.
