DARRYL F. ZANUCK PERSONAL ARCHIVE OF PRESS CLIPPINGS
1917-1950
A set of twelve oversized volumes filled with hundreds of press clippings from newspapers all over the country related to Darryl F. Zanuck and 20th Century Fox, the studio he founded and ruled over for thirty years. Meticulously complied by Zanuck's personal secretary, all scrapbooks are numbered and have handwritten notations on the inside front covers indicating the range of dates the clippings cover. Virtually the entire early history of 20th Century Fox can be gleaned from these clippings, they are so extensive. Interestingly, the first volume has a special inscription reading Mr. Zanuck's Personal Clipppings/Happy Birthday Sept. 5th, 1929. Evidently this gift, which was continually updated for the next twenty years, was started for the producer when he was just twenty-seven years old. 'Volume 12' ends abruptly in 1950, though on a positive note as the last few pages are devoted to articles praising "All About Eve," a film that garnered Zanuck a 'Best Picture' Academy Award. Also included are seven other volumes of clippings from Zanuck's collection which relate to the films "In Old Chicago" (1938) (two volumes), "Lillian Russell" (1940), "Captain Eddie" (1945) and "Way of a Gaucho" (1952) plus two miscellaneous ones related to the studio and its stars.
