The case with foliate-tied eagle-and-dolphin head handle to the basket top cast with swags of flowers and foliage with winged cherubs with scallop shell crowns, foliate budding flower finials, tall glazed side panels, the base with later(?) mouldings and brass button feet, the 6in. square gilt-brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with well pierced blued steel hands, matted centre with calendar aperture, winged spandrels, the movement with five ringed pillars, single wire fusee, knife-edge verge escapement with original florally engraved heart-shaped backcock, pull quarter repeat on two bells via an unusual pull-wind system on the front-plate, the back plate signed Nathaniel Hodges Londini Fecit within a foliate cartouche surrounded by further engraving of tulips and foliage

Lot Essay

Hodges, Nathaniel. A Free Brother in the Clockmakers' Company in December 1681. In 1687 he is recorded as in arrears with his quarterage payments and is not mentioned after. Had premises in Wine Office Court in Fleet Street. A clock by Hodges is illustrated in Percy Dawson The Iden Clock Collection, Antique Collectors' Club, 1987, pp.229-30.
