1827 was the year that David Cox returned to London after an absence of 13 years. He lived in Kennington between his two continental trips of 1826 and 1829. He had recently returned from France, and his concentration on marine subjects at this period can perhaps be attributed to his contact with the Anglo-French artists working in Paris and northern France, such as Francia and Bonington.
