Lot Essay

There is a similar drawing from almost the same viewpoint in a sketchbook in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The underdrawing and handling of the medium are typical of Cox's later drawings. Bettws-y-Coed was Cox's base from where he made his numerous Welsh tours from 1844 until his death.
