Lot Essay

The present watercolour was taken from an album of sketches compiled by Sarah Brooks, the granddaughter of Mrs Boover Brooks, de Wint's aunt. The album then passed by descent to Mrs A.G. Dawes, who sold the 26 watercolours in these Rooms in 1976. Randall Davies ('Peter de Wint' in the Old Water-Colour Society's Club, I, 1924, p. 13) mentions a meeting between Miss Brooks and Mr and Mrs de Wint. Sarah's father, the Rev. J.B. Brooks, Rector of St Mary's Nottingham, used to accompany de Wint on sketching trips when the artist stayed with them.
