A HISTORIC SOUVENIR OF THE CAMP DAVID ACCORDS, SIGNED BY THE THREE PARTICPANTS
Egyptian President Muhammad Anwar al Sadat's historic visit to Jerusalem in November 1977 initiated the Middle East peace process that concluded with the Camp David Accords in March 1979. President Carter invited Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to Camp David on September 5, 1978 to open formal talks and after 13 days of intense negotiations, agreed upon a Framework for Peace in the Middle East and a Framework for the Conclusion of a Peacy Treaty between Egypt and Israel. Despite later deadlocks on such issues as Palestinian autonomy, the formal agreements were signed, ending the 31-year state of war between Egypt and Israel. Here, the three men are shown standing side by side before a row of flags (the U.S., Mexico and Israel).
