KING, Martin Luther, Jr. (1929-1968). Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? New York: Harper & Row, 1967.
8o. Original quarter cloth; pictorial dust jacket. A fine copy.
FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. on the front free endpaper ("Martin Luther King Jr."). King's last book is partly based upon and uses for its title King's last address as President of Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 16 August 1967. King addresses issues raised by recent urban race riots, white backlash and the assassination of James Meredith (1966), but looks beyond the struggle in the United States to what he termed the world house: "We have inherited," he writes, "a large house, a great 'world house' in which we have to live together--black and white, Easterner and Westerner, Gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Moslem and Hindu..." and, only months before his own death at the hands of an assassin, proclaims that "oppressed people cannot remain oppressed forever," for "the yearning for freedom eventually manifests itself."
