ADAMS, John Quincy. Engraved portrait signed ("John Quincy Adams"), by N. Dearborn, Boston (imprint below portrait), n.d. 4 5/8 x 3¼ inches (including margins), printed within decorative engraved borders on an unusual high-gloss card, signed in blank upper margin, captioned at bottom: "John Quincy Adams 6th President of the U.S. of America," with facsimile signature beneath, very minor oxidation to margins.
A RARE SIGNED PORTRAIT OF PRESIDENT JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
Adams died in 1848 when photography was still in its infancy and before the practise of signing images became widespread (although many engravers made it a practice to add a facsimile signature beneath a portrait). Adams is in fact the earliest President for whom any signed portraits exist, and these are relatively are. Bacuase the only two photographs extant of Adams were daguerreotypes, the only extant signed images are engraved portraits. An identical example was part of the Jacobs Collection (sale, Sotheby's, 29 October 1996, lot 88, $4250).
