ARTHUR, Chester A. (1881-1885), President. Cabinet portrait photograph signed ("Chester A. Arthur") as President, New York: imprint of Mora, 707 Broadway, N. Y., [signed 16 August 1882]. Albumen photograph (7 x 4¼ in.) including card mount with Mora imprint, faint, nearly imperceptible mat-burn.
A very appealing head and shoulders portrait of President Arthur in suit and tie. Very boldly signed and dated in lower portion. A fine, dark inscription. SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHS OF ARTHUR ARE QUITE RARE. Only three examples have been sold in the last 25 years, according to American Book Prices Current, including a tinted image, part of the Jerome Shochet Collection (sale, Christie's, 20 May 1994, lot 5, $10,000), and an untinted example in the Jacobs Collection (sale, Sotheby's, 29 October 1996, lot 99, $3,000). The present example is the only one explicitly dated during Arthur's term as President.
