Lot Essay

Johann Christian Strenge (1758-1828), was sent to America in 1776 to fight in the Revolutionary War, and, like many of his counterparts, opted to stay after the war was over. He settled in Lancaster County, where he was active in the Hempfield Township community where he was a schoolmaster and Justice of the Peace. For a similar example see Frederick S. Weiser and Howell J. Heaney, The Gift is Small, The Love is Great. The Pennsylvania German Fraktur of the Free Library of Philadelphia, vol. 1. Breinigsville: The Pennsylvania German Society and the Free Library of Philadelphia, 1976.
