In the Japanese taste, comprising twelve forks and twelve knives, each handle imitating a kodzuka, cast and chased with exotic figures, foliage and birds, the matte-finished silver tines and blades bright-cut engraved with leaves, branches and Japanese-style monogram JMH, within original fitted covered velvet box lined in silk, each marked on tines and blades

Lot Essay

A similar service, also in original case, sold in these Rooms, January 21, 1994, lot 79.

The handles of this service are modelled on Japanese ko-gatama knives. Ko-gatama knives have removable handles or kodzuka, delicately worked in mixed metals with scenes of nature or mythology (see Carpenter, Gorham Silver, rev. ed. 1997, pp. 83-84).
