Lot Essay
This rare cann is an important document of an unrecorded mark of William Wilson of Abingdon, Maryland. Bearing both the known mark of Joseph Toy (1748-1826) and an unpublished WW mark attributable to his partner William Wilson (1755-1829), this cann contributes a new maker's mark to the body of known Maryland marks. The mark of Joseph Toy used here is illustrated in Jennifer Faulds Goldsborough, Silver in Maryland, 1983, mark no. 259, p. 285. Another cann by these makers, briefly in partnership in Abingdon circa 1785-1790, is illustrated in the same volume, cat. no. 269. Toy moved to Baltimore in 1796, when he became a stationer.
