Lot Essay

Signed Ezekiel Brown Cambridge, Done at Valley Forge. In style and motif this work relates to contemporary fraktur of the Pennsylvania German's. Brown served as a surgeon during the Revolutionary war and is listed on the Historic Valley Forge compellation of records of doctors from Massachusetts who served in the encampment. It was likely that he was influenced by the arts of the surrounding area when he composed this work.
