David and Susan Lewis married May 28, 1840, and sat for this pair of paintings in 1841. The paintings hung in their dining room during their lifetime, as seen below. The couple lived in Scottsdale, New York, and David Lewis died in 1887 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
