Lot Essay

This sideboard is one of a small group of finely crafted, diminutive examples made in Rhode Island in the late 18th or early 19th century. Distinctive features of this group include a sliding tray above the central drawer, unusual curly oval panels in the center of the drawer front, and satinwood or maple facing panels on the legs. A very closely related example is illustrated in Sack, American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection, "American Masterpieces and Rarities" (Vol. 6, P3889), p. 45. This example is now in the Denver Art Museum. Another related Rhode Island sideboard is illustrated in Sack, vol. 3, p. 826.
