A large coat-of-arms inscribed Frieland in the center on a field of peony stems and pairs of butterflies, the rim underglaze blue diaper pattern enclosing cartouches of domestic animals and iron-red and gilt flower sprigs, the back with large boughs of Chinese Imari peony
10¾in. (27.3cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Fewer barber's basins than dishes seem to have been made in the "Provinces" series. In 1879 Lady Charlotte Schreiber records in her journal acquiring one with the arms of Groningen (See C. Le Corbeiller, op. cit., p. 39)
