A LARGE ARMORIAL PLATE
Circa 1740
The center with a large coat-of-arms in colored enamels and gilt for Clifford, the well and rim finely painted in a Chinese Imari palette with fruiting and flowering vines and boughs, a still-life of auspicious objects, and the wyvern crest, back with finely drawn iron-red and gilt butterflies between narrow borders
10¼in. (26cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The earliest of three services with these arms, probably for Hugh, 4th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, who married Lady Anne Lee, daughter of the Earl of Lichfield. See D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 298
