Lot Essay

See Hall, p. 68, pl. 51. Owing to the Scottish connection, it is likely that the historic circus lion Wallace was named and trained by James Carter. Carter was a Scot and a lion tamer for Wombwell's Managerie and later William Batty for Astley.
