Lot Essay

A study for the painted sketch of Les jeunes amoureux, with Newhouse Gallery in 1970, datable to 1765 (A. Ananoff, op. cit., no. 611, fig. 1629). The picture, barely larger than the drawing, differs from it only in details such as in the position of the left hand of the shepherdess or the presence of a tree trunk on the right hand side of the composition. A drawn variant of the subject with the shepherd asleep was formerly in the Ephrussi Collection (A. Ananoff, op. cit., no. 611/2, fig. 1632).
