Lot Essay

The son of an engraver, Gourlay Steell studied at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder (see lot 305), and exhibited for many years at the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy, of which he became a full member in 1859. Queen Victoria appointed him her 'Animal Painter for Scotland' on the death of Landseer in 1873.
