Lot Essay

This was purchased for the Forbes Collection in the same auction as Frith's 'For Better, For Worse' (lot 10) at the very inception of the Victorian pictures collection (see Christopher Forbes's essay in the first catalogue of the present sale).

A larger version (34 x 55 in.) was sold by Christie's, Edinburgh, 24 and 25 October, 1989, and a further version was mentioned in Art at Auction, (25 x 33½ in.), New York, 2 March 1967.
