Mattheus Molanus is first recorded as a member of the Middelburg Guild of Saint Luke in 1625 and the following year he was registered as a painter and a citizen in that city. His name appears regularly in the Guild's archives until his death in 1645, when he was buried at the Oude Kerkhof in Middelburg on 3 April.
