Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Karen Schaffers-Bodenhausen of the Rijksbureau Voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for identifying the sitter from photographs (private communication, 12 April 2002). We are also grateful to Mr. Martin Royalton-Kisch (verbal communication, 18 September 2002) and Mr. Rudi Ekkart (verbal communication, 1 November 2002) who having seen the painting in person, do not think the present composition is painted by the hand of Pourbus but that of a later follower.
