Lot Essay

G.W.C. van Wezel will include this drawing in his forthcoming Jan Toorop Catalogue raisonné.

Beginning in 1900 Toorop and his family spent summers at Domburg, a Norwegian seaside town frequented by many artists including Piet Mondrian. The sitter is likely Emma Bellwidt, a singer and friend of the family.
