Lot Essay

Executed circa 1906, the present work was the final study for Melchers's imporant work entitled Portrait of Mrs. Gari Melchers in the Detroit Institute of Arts. The setting for the present work was the home of Melchers's fellow artist and friend, George Hitchcock, located in Holland.
