DOMAINE DE LA ROMANIE-CONTI

This Domaine is justly lauded as the pre-eminent, greatest red wine estate in the whole of Burgundy. It owns exclusively two of the most famous and remarkable Grands Crus of the Ctte de Nuits - Romanie-Conti and La Tbche - along with the largest sectors of Richebourg, Romanie-Saint-Vivant and Grands Echizeaux. It was a pioneer of Domaine bottling, and has been a standard-bearer of authenticity, complexity and quality for the whole region throughout the 20th century

Until after the 1945 vintage, the estate succeeded in maintaining the plantations of un-grafted, pre-phylloxera vines throughout the Romanie-Conti vineyard. In the final years, yields were derisory, but legendary wines were produced. It is an enormous thrill to be able to offer six vintages - back to 1934 - of these historic bottlings. There are also four vintages of Richebourg, including 1961 and 1928, with La Tbche 1961 and 1959, as well as several examples of classic Grands-Echizeaux.

MAISON LEROY

The Guardian of Great Vintages is how the late Henri Leroy always used to describe his company, and his daughter Mme. Bize-Leroy has faithfully maintained the traditions. Superb reserves of Burgundy's greatest vintages lie buried in the firm's cellars, which lie in a fold of the Ctte de Beaune behind Meursault.

Although the Leroy business dates from 1868, I believe that the firm really rose to prominence thanks to the family fortune established by Henri Leroy in the early twentieth century. He owned distilleries in the Cognac region, and also exported wine for the making of sparkling wines in Germany. By 1942, he was in a position to buy a half-share in the Domaine de la Romanie-Conti, which half-share the family has owned ever since (although the firm no longer distributes the wines of the DRC).

The Leroy business has for long had a reputation for seeking out small quantities of exceptional wines in the greatest Burgundy vintages, for tending, bottling and maturing over many decades. The wines are typically deep in colour and rich in structure. They hold their vibrancy and power with extraordinary tenacity. This is an exceptional range, with Mazis-Chambertin, Musigny and Chambertin vintages being particularly strongly represented.
