Lot Essay

This painting is attributable to the artist Jaganath (active between 1558-1605), who did four comparable European paintings in the Gulshan Album. Two of the paintings in the Album (nos. 50-51) are attributed by Milo Beach in 'The Gulshan Album and Its European Sources', Bulletin of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1965, vol. 332, pp. 63-91, figs. 4 and 9) while another two are signed (nos. 66 and 95, both unpublished). All of these works share a similar treatment in the architecture and heavily modeled clothing.
