An English lacquered-brass hanging beam balance
De Grave, Short, Fanner & Co., London. Late 19th Century
The beam with index arm and stamped 4 on the underside, with two brass pans, in a fitted mahogany case, the main section lifting out to reveal recesses for ten brass weights from 1DM to 2lb, one stamped AVERY LTD, six stamped AVERY and three with a crest comprising the letters VR beneath a crown and above the number 2, the case with an appled trade label in the lid showing medals for the years 1851, 1862 and 1885, with two brass hooks and eyes and a brass push-button catch, stamped on the outside AU (x2)
