A Dutch Amsterdam faux tortoiseshell painted longcase clock with moonphase and alarm
Harmanus Huyslandt, Amsterdam. First half 18th Century
The case decorated overall with panels of mock red tortoiseshell on an ebonised ground, the hood with caddy top and surmounted by three re-gilt ball finials, fretwork panels to the front and sides, brass-capped pilasters to the front, the trunk with chamfered angles, foliate carving to the door centred by a brass lenticle cast as Europa and the bull, the plinth with outset angles and on bun feet, the brass dial with silvered arcaded Roman and Arabic chapter ring, signed Harmanus Huyslandt AMSTERDAM, pierced blued steel hands, the foliate engraved and matted centre with silvered subsidiary seconds ring with date aperture, alarm-setting disc, ringed winding holes, the days of the week, their deities and the moonphase displayed through a lunette aperture, the four pillar movement with anchor escapement, Dutch strike and alarm on two bells
