(A few wormholes at beginning and end, a few initials shaved, repaired tears into text without loss in c8, k1, y5, one or two repaired marginal tears, occasional light dampstain at upper margin, a few light stains.) Late 16th-century German blindtooled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, portrait panel of Judith (upper cover) and Jael (lower cover), heads-in-medallion rolls, two brass fore-edge clasps, blue edges. Provenance: Hans vam Hornn, citizen of Hamburg (16th-century title inscription) -- annotations in at least two 16th-century German hands adding events on local history with dates as late as 1543 -- Mich. Richey, 1724 (title inscription, literary historian of Lower Saxony, author of Idioticon Hamburgense [1754]).

FIRST EDITION of the 'last great work of Mainz book illustration' (Fuchs, Mainzer Frühdrucke mit Buchholzschnitten). The fine woodcuts are the work of the Master WB and his shop. They depict fanciful town views, stylised and actual bust portraits, and historical scenes. The author, originally a goldsmith of Wernigerode, lived at Braunschweig from 1475 to about 1501. His chronicle draws on earlier works and is particularly valuable for the preservation of the low-German vernacular and the richness of detail. It was first published in High German in 1589. This copy does not show either variant cited in GW. HC *4990; BMC I, 37 (IB. 259); GW 4963; BSB-Ink. B-765; Borchling & Clausen 197; Schreiber 3531; Goff C-488.
