8° (178 x 119mm). Contemporary French speckled calf, gilt spine compartments, red speckled edges (spine frayed at head and foot with wormhole in upper compartment, covers lightly scuffed and bowed). Provenance: E.H.L. (contemporary owner's initials on title, shelf mark on pastedown) -- Nordkirchen Library (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Although published in 1688, the year of his consecration as second bishop of Quebec, Saint Vallier's account of his diocese was the product of a visit made to Canada three years earlier in 1685. Valued for its observations on Indian tribes and their relations with the French settlers, it also indicates the keen rivalry between Dutch and French fur traders. There is a variant title with the wording Relation des Missions de la Nouvelle France. A GOOD, CLEAN COPY WITH WIDE MARGINS. Church 707; Howes S-41; Sabin 38506 & 66978.
