SELIGMANN, Johann Michael (1720-1762). Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel. Translated and edited by Georg Leonhard Huth. Nuremberg: Johann Joseph Fleischmann, 1749-64.
Parts I-VI (only, of 9) in 3 volumes, 2° (390 x 245mm). 3 engraved frontispieces with French titles, 6 titles with engraved vignettes, three printed in black and red, Parts I-II and V-VI containing 207 hand-coloured engraved plates by Seligmann after Mark Catesby and George Edwards, Parts III & IV defective, with plates and majority of text excised, leaving engraved portrait of a Samoyed and hand-coloured engraved folding map of Carolina (occasional light staining, two plates offset onto text in Part VI, tear to map). Contemporary calf, spines gilt in compartments, vol. I restored, some wear to vols. II and III). Provenance: Count Jakob Johann von Löwenburg (crowned CL monogram stamp, in 1748) -- Vienna, Piarist College (18th-century inscription).
This work comprises Georg Leonhard Huth's translation of George Edwards's A Natural History of Birds (1743-51) and Gleanings of Natural History (1758-64), and Mark Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. Seligmann's plates are copies of those in the original works, sometimes incorporating flora and landscapes not included in the originals. Edwards's Natural History and Gleanings 'was one of the most important of all bird books, both as a fine bird book and as a work of ornithology. It is still high on the list' (Fine Bird Books). This compilation by Seligmann brought the images to a continental audience. Cf. Anker 462; cf. Nissen IVB 857. Sold not subject to return.
