(20th century), with signature Shozan saku [Takano Shozan (1889-1976)]
The cylindrical vase with a slightly flared mouth and decorated with peacock feathers in brown, black and gold hiramaki-e on a soft beige ground, the iridescent "eye" at the end of the feathers dusted with metallic powders, the rim of the vase fundame and the interior and the recessed base roiro, signature on base in gold lacquer

With wood box inscribed on the exterior of the cover Hane moyo kanshitsu kabin (Dry lacquer flower vase with feather design) and signed on the underside Shozan saku

Lot Essay

Takano Shozan was trained as a lacquer artist in his home town of Kumamoto. Later he studied at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts and the Tokyo School of Fine Arts as an undergraduate and graduate student of the lacquer department under Shirayama Shosai (1853-1923). He first exhibited in the Teiten exhibition in 1927 and continued to exhibit almost annually. He was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in 1955.
