Lot Essay

Using a high-fire technique that originated in the late 16th century, Setoguro (black Seto) ware achieves its signature glaze when pulled from the kiln at a very high temperature. First made as kiln temperature test pieces, these works were sometimes taken hot from the kiln and immersed in water, turning the iron glaze to red and brownish black. Born in Gosei, Nara Prefecture, Tsujimura has had innumerable solo exhibitions in Japan and in Europe, including a retrospective at the Chado Museum, Kyoto in 1999.
