Lot Essay

The present work is a cast of Epstein's maquette Lovers on an Eagle's Back and dates from about 1946 when it was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries. When exhibited there a private catalogue note in the Gallery's master copy indicated that a maximum of six casts were envisaged. However Epstein did not number his casts or keep good records so it is not certain how many casts may have been made.
