Lot Essay

Frederick George Cotman began his career and indeed established his reputation by painting fashionable society portraits, domestic genre scenes and narrative pictures. Cotman had spent seven successful years at the Royal Academy in London, studying under tutors who included Frederic Leighton and Henry Tanworth Wells amongst others. In his later years Cotman concentrated on his passion for landscape painting inspired by his native East Anglia.
