A French walnut marquetry secretaire àbbattant, late 18th century and later
with restorations, probably by Hache of Grenoble, surmounted by a later marble top, and inlaid with chequered lines, containing a frieze drawer, extended by an oval floral medallion within a ribboned border, enclosing a fitted interior with compartments possibly later, fitted with a shelf below and enclosed by a pair of crossbanded panel doors with similar chequer strung borders, between simulated fluted stiles, on square tapered legs, the fall inset with a panel of tooled leather, bearing a label of 'Hache a Grenoble' on the inside of the left door below -- 56¼in. (143cm.) high, 34¼in. (87cm.) wide, 16½in. (42cm.) deep

Lot Essay

Jean-François Hache (1730-1796), the fourth of the twelve children of Pierre Hache, is the best known of this dynasty of ébénistes. Starting in his father's workshop, he set up on his own around 1754, producing both luxury and everyday items of furniture. He is recorded as using thirteen different labels at different dates.
