Lot Essay

The path to Shambhala and signs of Shambhala are the subjects of countless paintings by Roerich. Many works, such as this one, depict images of Maitreya (the Bodhisattva who is to appear as a Buddha 5000 years after the death of Gautama) carved into rocks.

We are grateful to Daniel Entin, director of the Roerich Museum in New York and Gvido Trepsa for providing information on this lot.
